A social worker is a person with high education in social work. In Georgia a person who has passed Ivane javakhishvili Tbilisi state university certificate program in social worker is considered as a social worker. Social work in several countries includes various concentrations such as Social Policy, Social Administration, Clinical Social Work, etc. Clinical social workers have to go through the licensing procedure after graduation from university to receive permission for practice.

Social workers work in all social fields and entities: health protection, employment, social welfare, prisons, army, schools, kindergartens, private firms, etc. They work with people, families and communities and at policy level as well. In Georgia, there is no social worker in parliament or executive board. In other countries, social workers are actively involved in both branches.
Social workers have social work standards, but non-sanctioned, which means that meeting these standards is issue of professional dignity and not legal responsibility. In other countries social work standards are within the legal framework.
In Georgia social work practice is monitored within the employment organizational, because social work is non-regulated profession. Part of social service embracing social work service is regulated in certain fields, for example Child welfare.
Supervision in social work means social workers professional support provided by more experienced colleague via consultations, professional support, realizing chances for development and ways to solving problematic issues, sharing professional achievements. This is a crucial part of practice. A supervisor can be provided internally (by someone working in the same entity), or externally (by invited specialist). Usually, this component exists in social work service provider organizations. In Georgia, supervision is provided in some entities.
