Meeting for inclusion of children with disabilities to Surami public school

On October 18, together with the Union “Our Children”, the representatives of  GASW met with  teachers and parents in Surami public school # 2.  The goal of the meeting was to enhance the acceptance of children with disabilities and facilitate their socialization. At the meeting, which was initiated by the school administration, the GASW representatives – Natia Matcharashvili and Guranda Tetradze talked about the myths existed in the society in relation to people with disabilities and the actual reality. They also talked about the acceptable terminology, communication strategies and importance of social inclusion.   Lia Tabatadze, the representative of the Union “Our Children”, talked about the needs of children with disabilities and on actions to be carried out by teachers and parents for ensuring the equal rights and instructional environment for every child.
During the discussion, the focus was made on issues, such as:  importance of observation on misbehavior antecedents in case of children with challenging behavior and planning of the relevant strategies; possibilities of cooperation with Guardianship-Custody department of the Social Service Agency for strengthening of families and creation of an adequate family environment for children.  At the end of the meeting, participants noted that information they received was important and useful for them. They expressed their desire to have smaller group meetings with specialists, to discuss the concrete cases and get the recommendations.

GASW welcomes such activity of school administration in dealing with such problematic issues and is always ready to cooperate with schools and other public institutions for the improvement of social inclusion of persons with disabilities.  We’d like to express our gratitude to the principle of Surami # 2 public school, Mrs. Dali Broladze, for her initiative and the activities, implemented for ensuring appropriate school environment for students with disabilities.
